Building Soil Sense

A small device for understanding what plants need

INTRODUCTION:

Okay, Soil Sense. So I started my robotics like 2 years ago and I wanted to make a project which would solve a real problem instead of ultrasonic sensor “DuStBin”. So I set on a journey to learn more and more about microcontrollers and different sensors. I then came across a problem and started to design my project around it.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Currently, everyday farmers and enthusiasts lack accessible, portable devices designed for comprehensive on-site soil analysis and research.
Without affordable, real-time testing tools, growers must either wait on costly commercial lab tests or rely on basic analog meters that provide incomplete data.

SOLUTION:

  1. Prototyping - I started to then think of which microcontroller i need to use and which sensors/modules i use. The first design i made was a bit weird and looked ASS but then I kept working on it and then I landed on a design which I have been using till now.
  2. Improving - After completing the prototype, I then started to improve little bits of the project along with the software to make it more efficient.
  3. Finally - In the end i completed everything along with a PCB Design for my project and custom python application.

HARDWARE SPECIFICS:

Microcontroller Used: ESP32 C3 Supermini
Sensors Used: Soil Sensor module + DHT11
